Belarus' Constitutional Commission unveils schedule of work

01.04.2021

The Constitutional Commission is set on systemic, targeted, and fruitful work, Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission Piotr Miklashevich told journalists on 31 March, BelTA has learned.

“Today, the Constitutional Commission has started working on a very important task – to develop specific proposals regarding possible amendments to the Constitution of Belarus. We are keen to make the work of the commission systemic, targeted, and, most importantly, fruitful,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

According to him, the Constitutional Commission has adopted the schedule of its work. “The commission will convene twice a month and is set to prepare the variant of the amended Constitution by 1 August,” Piotr Miklashevich noted. “We have also outlined the responsibilities of the group of lawyers from the Constitutional Commission. They will meet at the Constitutional Court twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to work on the legal wording of proposals from citizens and the members of the commission,” he added.

It is important to analyze carefully all proposals and introduce the most important of them to the Constitution, Piotr Miklashevich stressed. “The rest of the proposals will be enshrined in other legal regulations and laws. There is a saying that the Constitution is encapsulated in laws,” he said. “The National Center of Legal Information is collecting proposals from citizens by mail and email. We have already received a lot of such proposals. We invite citizens who have ideas about the constitutional amendments to take part in this process, because the draft version of the amended Constitution will be put to a referendum. Every citizen will have the right to express their opinion about the amendments by casting their vote,” he noted.
