10.11.2025

Belarus is hosting an IAEA mission for the appraisal of education and training, EduTA (Education and Training Appraisal in Radiation Protection and Safety), BelTA learned from the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department at the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor).

The purpose of this IAEA mission, requested by Belarus, is a comprehensive assessment of the established infrastructure for personnel training and professional development in the field of radiation protection and safety, and the state of national mechanisms, approaches, and capabilities in this area. Among the issues scheduled for review is the potential for the International Sakharov Environmental Institute of Belarusian State University to host international postgraduate courses on radiation protection and safety.

The EduTA mission includes a group of international experts and IAEA staff, led by Jenia Vassileva (Bulgaria). The group also includes mission coordinator Andrea Luciani (IAEA), and experts Aleksandr Vodovatov (Russia) and Sotiris Economides (Greece). They will conduct an expert assessment to identify the areas for improvement and assisting the host country in preparing an action plan to address the identified gaps.

The assessment procedure consists of three phases: a preparatory phase, during which relevant data is collected and the requesting country completes a pre-assessment questionnaire; the appraisal itself; and the preparation of the mission report. The mission report is issued after review and agreement with the Belarusian side. It includes recommendations and an action plan for improving the current situation in the short term, as well as long-term measures aimed at strengthening the state's capacity and capabilities in the field of education and training.

The mission will contribute to strengthening the national legal and regulatory framework for education and training in radiation protection and safety in line with IAEA safety standards. It will also help refine the country's established system for training specialists in this field and the approaches tailored to national needs for enhancing competency.

The EduTA mission's work will continue until 14 November 2025.
