Belarus to deliver radioactive waste management report at IAEA review meeting

The Belarusian delegation is set to take part in the eighth meeting of contracting parties to review compliance with the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, which will be held at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna on 17-28 March, BelTA learned from the Nuclear Energy Department of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

The delegation will include representatives of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations (Gosatomnadzor), the Energy Ministry, the Sosny Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The delegation will be led by Head of Gosatomnadzor Olga Lugovskaya.

The meeting will consider Belarus’ national report on the implementation of the convention for the period from 2021 to 2024, including the key results of the work done on the development of the legislative and regulatory framework, development of the radioactive waste management system and its scientific and technical support, improvement of the nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure and its components, strengthening of human resources and other areas.

Attention will also be paid to cooperation with the IAEA and other international organizations at the stages of construction, commissioning and operation of the BelNPP, as well as on the planned project to construct a radioactive waste disposal facility. The Belarusian delegation will present the areas in which progress has been made in fulfilling the obligations under the convention, and will inform about the best practices and challenges ahead.

In the course of preparation for the meeting, Belarus answered questions from other countries on the report. A total of 90 questions were received. The national reports of other states were also studied and 225 questions to them were compiled.

The Joint Convention was concluded under the auspices of the IAEA in 1997. It was joined by 92 states. Belarus has been a party to this international treaty since 2003 and participates in all its review meetings. They are held to consider national reports on the fulfillment of the international obligations, as well as policies and practices of spent fuel and radioactive waste management.
