CEC chief: Elections are the main form of manifestation of people's sovereignty

Elections are the main form of manifestation of the people's sovereignty, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said at a meeting of the Central Election Commission of Belarus to mark the 35th anniversary of the Belarusian institution of elections, BelTA has learned.

“On 4 December 1989, still as part of the Soviet Union, the Supreme Council of the BSSR adopted a resolution on the establishment of the central election commission as a permanent state body. This decision, along with the declaration “On State Sovereignty of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic” of 27 July 1990 laid the foundation for the formation of the electoral system of the sovereign Republic of Belarus, which has become one of the elements of modern state building,” Igor Karpenko said.

In the Republic of Belarus as a unitary democratic social state of law, elections are the main form of manifestation of the sovereignty of the people as the only source of state power, a reflection of their political will, the CEC chief said. “In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and the current legislation, the electoral system includes various components and unites all participants of the electoral process: from election organizers to a particular voter or candidate for elected office,” he stressed. “Today this hall has gathered representatives of the professional community of election organizers and the public. In fact, this is your holiday. It is a holiday of all those who care about the fate of our country, its sovereignty and independence. Those who look confidently into the future, who create for the sake of new generations of Belarusians.”
