Minsk shows interest in developing cooperation with Iran at the regional level. Possible areas of cooperation were discussed at the meeting of Minsk Mayor Vladimir Kukharev with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to Belarus Alireza Sanei in Minsk on 29 November, BelTA has learned.

According to Vladimir Kukharev, Minsk is open for dialogue on a wide range of issues - from mutually beneficial trade, equipment supplies, exchange of delegations to projects in culture and sports.

Cooperation in tourism, healthcare and education, as well as the creation of joint ventures look also promising. One of the proposals is to open a trade house of Iran in Minsk. The Minsk mayor invited the mayor of Tehran to Minsk to discuss the issues of interaction in detail.

“We need to outline the areas and prepare a roadmap on how to move forward,” Vladimir Kukharev said.

He thanked the embassy for the work aimed at strengthening Belarusian-Iranian relations and offered to make full use of Minsk's production potential and experience in addressing the tasks of modernizing the housing and utilities sector and infrastructure, landscaping and gardening. The city authorities are also ready to promote industrial cooperation.

“If necessary, we can organize a meeting with business representatives of not only Minsk but the entire country,” Vladimir Kukharev added.

In turn, Alireza Sanei pointed out that Iran-Belarus cooperation have always been successful. The visit of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Iran was a turning point. “We have many opportunities to develop relations in different areas, including economy, culture, education, science and technology,” the ambassador said.

Belarus and Iran are celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations this year. The ambassador added that as soon as he arrived in Minsk on a diplomatic mission [in March 2023], he started looking for new points of convergence of interests. He sees great potential in strengthening friendly ties between the two capitals. The initiatives include exchange of experience in the work of the city authorities, organization of Days of Culture, visits of business delegations and others.

“We are always glad to receive offers. We are ready for mutually beneficial cooperation. We will get you familiar with the products manufactured in Minsk. We will be grateful if the embassy provides us with information about business representatives of your country,” Vladimir Kukharev said. “We can work together in medicine, agriculture (if there is interest in Belarusian agricultural machinery). In addition, Minsk residents love Days of Culture. Iranian culture is ancient and original, and Minskers will be interested to learning new things about it. Another area is tourism. Iran has a large number of attractions that can be visited by tourists from Belarus. We will gladly welcome guests from Iran.”

A memorandum of cooperation was signed between Tehran and Minsk in 1995, and an agreement on establishing twinning ties was concluded in 2006.
