Belarus' CEC: International election observation is a neccesary form of interaction

International election observation is a form of communication and interaction between experts and professionals in the sector, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said in an interview to ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The question is often asked whether we should abandon international observation. I do not think it would be the right decision. Still, we primarily consider international observation as a form of communication and interaction between experts and professionals in this field. This is very important from the point of view of further development of state building and the electoral system in general. We plan to invite representatives of the central election commissions of the CIS countries, as well as colleagues from the Association of World Electoral Bodies, the headquarters of which is located in the Republic of Korea. The association unites about 111 countries. Congresses of this organization are held annually, and we actively participate in them,” Igor Karpenko said.

According to the CEC chairman, long before the elections negative conclusions are sometimes made about the country, which do not always correspond to reality. “This year was no exception. A report on the serious threat to the OSCE human dimension in Belarus since 2020 was posted in May. The cynicism of the very wording “threat to the human dimension in Belarus” is obvious: in Belarus, where it is now peaceful, calm and stable, where people work, where there are no interethnic conflicts on religious grounds. The OSCE does not see a number of local conflicts or prefers to gloss over the essential cause-and-effect relations of these or those conflicts. We are not against this organization; we are members of it and interact with it. We have repeatedly raised the issue that we need to develop common standards that would be applied equally everywhere. As it happens, the sovereignty of some states must be ensured, while the sovereignty of others can be trampled upon by brazenly interfering in the internal affairs of those sovereign States. This is unacceptable. We must realize that we hold elections first of all for ourselves. The task of the CEC is to create conditions so that the voter - the people who are the source of power - in accordance with the Constitution could freely come to the polling stations and make the choice in favor of their candidate,” Igor Karpenko said.
